East Tennessee's Connection to the McCarthy Era

Legendary East Tennessee criminal defense attorney, Ray Jenkins, served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Subcommittee investigating Sen. Joe McCarthy using undo influence for his staffer with the Army. The Minority Counsel was a young Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Jenkins, no stranger to Military justice, successfully defended himself against court martial for killing a threatening fellow soldier, even before attending University of Tennessee Law School. Out of hundreds of murder trials, Jenkins never lost a client to the death penalty.

Known as the “Terror of Tellico Plains”, Ray Jenkins biography of the same name was published by the East Tennnessee Historical Society in 1979.
